Please note that the ways described were being performed with Ubuntu 10. 4, however would likely stay a similar for almost any Linux submitting.

Pre-requisites

Git is the utility for version control on Linux. Handle the installation with a simple sudo apt-get install git-core. Additionally you need this curses selection improvement data install this deal together with sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev.
Confirm the latest Linux kernel model while using uname a new demand to help you download this related kernel supply to develop when using the git identical copy demand. We've utilised Linux two. 6 in this particular instance.

Now that you have the source, you need to configure it. You can use the command make menuconfig if you are experienced on what configuration parameters to set. If you are new to this, I would suggest you use the default configuration copy the existing config file to the kernel source directory with, for example, cp /boot/config/-2.6.32-38-generic .config
Now, run make oldconfig to start the configure process. Please note that here you will be prompted to answer Yes or No. If you are unsure, just keep on hitting Enter (that is a default Yes).
Naming the kernel
Next, it might be good to give your kernel a name. For this, open the Makefile, and edit the lines below:

You can now boot up to five Android
operating system versions on a single phone with just a reboot. All
you need is simple utility app called Boot Manager, a fairly large SD
card (at least 8 GB) and your favorite ROMs. Boot Manager is a unique
and powerful utility app from ‘www.init2winitapps.com’ and costs
just Rs 146 on the Android Market. The first ROM is installed on the
phone’s internal storage itself, while the other four ROMs are
installed on the SD card in the form of image files that are mounted
and ready for use when required. Each image file (boot, system, data
and SDEXT) is created according to the existing phone’s partition
table and ROM needs; but they can be tweaked to increase or decrease
the space for each ROM’s requirements too. Switching between ROMs
is as simple as selecting the desired ROM and rebooting the device.
The app switches the boot.img file according to the chosen ROM to
boot into. These ROMs run directly from the SD card without
disturbing or affecting the original ROM on your phone’s internal
storage. Those who like to test and try different ROMs from
third-party developers can benefit from this app. It can also benefit
those testing their apps on different Android OS versions using a
single phone. Let's see how you can configure and run this app. But
before we start, here are a few important things you need to know.

* You will need a rooted handset with a recovery (CWM or 4EXT recovery)
utility already installed on the phone.

* Your phone should have the
security flag set to OFF (S-OFF).XX An updated Superuser app with
logging disabled.

* An SD card with no bad sectors.

* A fully charged
phone. Connecting the charger is best suited.

Those unfamiliar with
some of the above terms can refer to the XDA forums on how to root,
S-OFF and install a custom recovery utility on the phone.

Those who
have incompatible handsets can try them at their own risk.

To get
more information about handset support and software related issues,
you can log on to the developer’s website at
‘www.init2winitapps.com’.

Note: Incorrect rooting or
tweaking can leave you with a permanently damaged phone. We are not
responsible for any bricked handsets while performing this guide. Do
this at your own risk.

Let’s begin. Pay for,
download and install the BootManager app from the Android Market. Run
the app. You will be greeted with a few welcome screens. Proceed with
the instructions on the screen and you will be informed to initially
setup your phone’s original ROM before installing any other ROM
using Boot Manager. This is a crucial step as your phone’s original
ROM’s boot.img file needs to be saved in order to boot into the
original ROM whenever you need it. Once done, the app will inform you
about the success of saving the boot image of your phone’s original
ROM. A warning message will also pop up, informing you not to do this
step if you are booted into one of the SD card’s ROM. This step
needs to be performed only once and will take just a few seconds. If
you bypassed this screen accidentally, you can do it after Boot
Manager starts up. It is recommended that you take a complete backup
of your phone’s existing ROM using the recovery utility of the
phone before proceeding.

Now that you are in the Boot Manager’s user
interface, you will see six screens from left to right named ‘Phone
ROM’, ‘ROM 1’, ROM 2’, ‘ROM 3’, ‘ROM 4’ and
‘Settings’ respectively. Begin with the Phone ROM first. Click on
the button ‘Manage UI’. This step is optional as it is just an
information screen setup for the phone’s ROM. Here, you can enter
the details about the ROM, such as ROM name, Kernel name, description
about the ROM and a screenshot for visual identification of the ROM.
Now proceed to the next step to install the first ROM. Make sure you
have downloaded the ROMS from the Internet and stored them in an
appropriate location on the SD card before you proceed. Now switch to
the ROM 1 screen and you shall find four buttons ‘Boot ROM’,
‘Install ZIP’, ‘Manage Slot’ and ‘Manage UI’. Click on
the ‘Install ZIP’ button. At this stage, this ROM 1 slot should
be empty as you have not yet installed any ROM. Clicking the Install
ZIP button will bring up three more options—‘Install ZIP’,
where you can start installing the ROM you downloaded; ‘Install
Kernel’, using which you can upgrade or replace the kernel of the
ROM installed on this slot; and ‘Restore Nandroid’, where you can
restore a backup of a ROM that you might have stored previously from
another ROM. The buttons are self explanatory. Click on ‘Install
ZIP’ and Boot Manager will open a file manager to locate the zip
file of the ROM you want to install. Select the zip file and you will
be asked if you want to wipe the system, cache and data partitions
before installing. Select all three and click on the 'install'
button. A confirmation window will ask for permissions to proceed,
which will be followed by another confirmation for the file system
needed for the specific ROM you are going to install. This would be
either an EXT2 or an EXT4 file system. Choose the file system as EXT4
if your ROM supports EXT4 or else EXT2 should be good enough. The app
then starts creating the image files, mounts them and installs the
specific ROM into that slot. The installation procedure will then
take place in the status bar. Keep an eye on the installation, which
should take around 10 minutes depending on the speed of the SD card.
Once completed, you can click on the notification and proceed to
‘Manage UI’ section of the ROM if needed. After it is done, all
you need to do is click on the ‘Boot ROM’ button and your phone
will boot into the ROM 1 you just installed. You can follow the same
procedure to install three other ROMS of your choice in slots ROM 2,
ROM 3 and ROM 4 respectively. Boot Manager will also install its app
in all the ROM slots you installed so that you can easily switch back
and forth into different ROMs. If you have taken a backup of your
apps, data and settings using Titanium Backup, you can restore your
data and apps into other ROMs with ease. But be careful, using
Titanium Backup across different ROM types can cause problems. Hence,
we recommend installing apps and setting up the ROM completely from
the start rather than restoring from Titanium Backup unless you know
how to handle it well.

Boot Manager actually creates a virtual file
with the partition table information of the phone and installs the
ROM accordingly. When you switch to a particular ROM, it replaces
only the boot image of the phone with the original boot image of the
ROM, which then instructs the handset that the partitions are not on
the phone’s internal storage, but on the SD card (actually creating
a hard link to the partitions). Once booted into the new ROM, you
will be able to use the phone as though it was installed on the
internal storage itself. Setup the phone as you would do when
installing a new ROM.

There might be times when you will witness a
failure to boot into the ROM, but don’t panic. If this happens,
simply replace the boot.img file of the phone back to its original.
To do this, remove and re-insert the battery, boot the phone into
recovery mode and flash the ‘update.zip’ located in the folder
‘/sdcard/BootManager/PhoneRom/’. This will replace the original
boot.img file to the phone and you will be back on your phone’s
original ROM.

to accommodate
custom built ROMs and kernels

Rooting a mobile
phone is not for everyone, but is also not too diicult. While some
Android handsets can be rooted in a single click, others need a
tedious procedure. Still, it is worth the trouble. Why root an
Android mobile? The answer is pretty simple—rooting Android is a
method which allows you to gain Administrative rights to the main
operating system, folders and files, and to allow you to tweak,
delete, replace or add custom files. This helps to increase
productivity, performance and also taps into hidden areas of the
phone to reveal additional features that the manufacturer does not
disclose. In short, take an example of the PC as the Android phone.
If you have Administrator or super user rights, you can install
software, replace operating systems with the one of your choice, tweak
the performance, add or delete files and applications and a lot
more. The one good thing about Samsung Android devices is that they
never have locked bootloaders, which is the key to gaining root
access. Usually, the root method is online almost immediately after
the release of the product. This helps amateur developers create
custom ROMs (Android operating system) for the device. Installing
custom ROMs can actually be a good option as you can have a very
light operating system—useless applications and eye-candy removed,
tweaked kernels for faster processing, additional applications for
better tweaking and productivity and a list of other possibilities.
In this section, we shall show you how you can go about rooting your
Samsung Galaxy Note in a few steps.

This method does
not increase the flash counter in the phone’s firmware and you
can switch back to the stock ROM if you need to claim for warranty.
Here is a list of all the tools you will need to keep ready to get
root access to the Samsung Galaxy Note.

# A fully charged
Samsung Galaxy Note: Not necessary that it should be charged to 10 %,
but around 60 % and above should do fine.

# The device set
to USB debugging enabled: you can do this by going to the following
section on your phone’s settings: Settings -> Applications ->
Development.

# The Micro USB
cable of the phone:This cable should be bundled with your device. If
you don’t have one, any other Micro USB cable would do.

# A PC with
Windows installed: We don’t think this needs any explanation, do
we?

# Drivers for your
Samsung GalaxyNote: you can download the latest version of Samsung
Kies and install it. Another method is to simply connect the phone to
the USB port after USB debugging is enabled and Windows should
automatically install the drivers. But Kies is a safer alternative.

# The flashing
utility: you will need the latest version of the Chain Fire Root
Flasher (CFRootflasher.zip) which can be downloaded from
http://tinyurl.com/7k9p8ro. This utility will do the necessary
flashing of the phone.Download the file
and extract the contents to a folder on your desktop.

# The Kernel:
In order to root the SGN, the correct Chain Fire Root Kernel is
needed. Download it from http://tinyurl.com/d5hhg39. Now this is
where you need to carefully download the exact kernel for your phone.
Got to Settings -> About Phone on the Note and check the kernel
version. It should be something like ‘2.6.34.7-N7000XXKJ4-CL641703’.
The important area here is after the two ‘X’ characters (in this
case “KJ4”). Note this down, go to the URL mentioned above and
download the file that corresponds to your firmware which has the
characters you are looking for (for example
“CF-Root-SGN_XX_XEN_KJ4-v5.0-CWM5.zip”). Download the file and
extract the contents to a folder on your desktop. Now that you have
kept ready what you require, let’s get started. Make sure your
phone is not connected to the PC at this time. We shall inform you
when it is needed.

STEP 1:
Open the folder which contains the kernel. You should see a .tar file
there. Unzip that too and you should fine a Zimage file.
Right-click on the file and select ‘Copy

STEP 2: Now
open the folder which contains the Chain Fire Root Flasher utility
and browse to the folder ‘Zimage’. Right-click in this folder and
click ‘Paste’. This should create a copy of the kernel file in
this folder.

STEP 3: Now hit
the backspace key and you should go back to the parent folder. Here
you should find the file ‘Not-rootedyet.bat’. Double-click this
file to execute it and the flashing process will begin.

STEP 4: Now
make sure your phone is charged, switched on, has USB debugging
enabled and then connect USB cable to the phone and to the PC.
Warning: Don’t do anything else as yet.

STEP 5:
Next, take a look the PC screen where the application window is
running. You will find a list of steps displayed there that you need
to do confirm you have ready. Make sure you have done all of it as
stated and do not ignore or skip any step there. Double check again
and once done, you can proceed further. Finally, only if you are
satisfied with the necessary requirements you should press any key
to continue.

STEP 6:
Now, on the PC screen, you will find the utility doing a load of
jobs scrolling across the window. Let the utility do the needful
while you wait and watch.

STEP 7:
This is an optional step which you need to manually do in case it is
needed. If you look at the process carefully, you will come to a
stage where the utility will highlight a text which states “if the
process gets stuck here for a long time . . .BLAH!! . . .BLAH!!! .”.
if the process continues further, nothing is needed to be done. But
if the screen is stuck there for a long time, you need to go to the
Settings -> Applications -> Development section of the phone
(do not disconnect the phone) and disable and re-enable USB
debugging. The utility will find the device and proceed further. If
you did not need to do this, ignore this step.

STEP 8: If
the above was successful, you should see a message stating that
temporary root has been obtained and the new kernel will be flashed.
You can now press any key to continue. Next you shall see the new
kernel being pushed to the phone.

STEP 9: If
all goes well in the above step, you should get the message stating
that the procedure is complete and the phone will be rebooted. Once
the reboot happens, you can disconnect the phone from the PC and
check if you have a new icon (application) installed on the phone in
the application drawer called ‘Superuser’. If this exists, then
you should have a successful rooted phone. If not, you can try the
entire process again. To check if you have root access, you can
download any application from the Android Market that requires root
privileges and test it. Titanium Backup, Root Manager, ROM Manager
are a few example apps that require root access.Since this utility
also pushes or installs Clockwork Mod recovery on your phone you can
start installing your favorite custom ROMs immediately. To check if
CWM has installed on your SGN, power of the phone and press the
combination keys ‘Volume up + Home + Power’ to enter the recovery
mode.

TIP

Since CWM is already installed now, it is recommended that you initially take a backup of the phone and store a copy of the backup on your PC for safety. This can be restored back to your phone in case there are any mishaps while installing custom ROMs or if you want to simply revert back to your previous ROM.

DISCLAIMER: These procedures are risky and can permanently brick or damage your phone, we will not be responsible for any damage caused to your phone.

Boost the performance of your Android phone to get rid of lags and slow responses using a simple script called the V6 SuperCharger script.

Since the Android handsets can be heavily tweaked with thirdparty ROMs and kernels, you might feel that either the ROM has good eye-candy and great features, but is slightly sluggish, or maybe the other way around. A developer named Zeppelirox has studied this behavior and written a script that helps tweak the Android operating system to gain performance in terms of graphical speed. What this actually does is tries to clear useless memory space (RAM management) by clearing unwanted memory hogging apps and decreasing the graphical lag which helps improve the performance of the home launcher, certain games, and the UI responsiveness. It is similar to automatic memory management software, but does it by running a script in the boot sequence and making it a default in the operating system. It also makes the home launcher ‘hard-to-kill’, saving it from reloading it every time and straining the memory.
Android puts each running app into OOM (Out Of Memory) groups and each is based on their priority from 1 to 6. These are as follows:

REQUIREMENTS

The V6 Supercharger Script Update 8 or higher (from the XDA forums)

Script Manager app (free from the Android Market)

BusyBox version v1.18.2 or lower (free from the
Android Market)

A rooted Android phone

Foreground Applications: These are apps that are presently running on the screen, which you see. It also includes system and phone apps running in the background that are necessary at all times.

Visible Applications:Apps that are visible to the user, but are not running in the foreground.

Secondary Server:These are applications and services that run in the background all the time. For example, SenseUI or Launcher Home.

Hidden Applications: Similar to visible apps, but still running in the background.

Content Provider: These are processes such as contacts content provider, calendar content provider, and so on.

Empty Applications: Apps that are running in standby and are not needed or are dormant in the background which can be safely shut down.By adjusting these app priorities, one can take control of the memory usage and shut them down, thus keeping the memory free and keeping your phone running faster and smoother.

NOTE: The V6 Supercharger script can be safely run on all Android phones; be it stock ROMs or third-party ROMs. It has presently been tested with Android Gingerbread and the ef ect will purely depend on the type of phone specs (GPU type, CPU speed and RAM capacity) and de? nitely on the kernel type. It will also depend on the amount of TSR (terminate and stay resident) apps such as alarms, live wallpapers, etc, that you may have installed which cause additional memory strain. Those using ICS-based ROMs can also try a similar method, but the script will be dif erent. You can get the scripts on the XDA forums.
Begin by rooting your phone if you haven’t already done so. You can ?nd the procedure to do so for your Android handset on the XDA forums. Those who have phones from unbranded Chinese manufacturers might ? nd it dii cult to get them rooted. Next, download and install BusyBox Installer and choose v1.18.2 or lower from the dropdown list and install it. Next, install Script Manager from the Android Market. Make sure you have BusyBox v1.18.2 or lower, unless speci? ed that the higher version can be used safely. You will ? nd the information from the XDA forums when downloading the Supercharger script. When you have all these apps installed, download the V6 Supercharger script update 8 from
‘http://tinyurl.com/4jpcvuj’.Scroll down to the attachments and ?nd the link ’V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-update8.sh.txt’. Right-click on the line and select ‘save to download folder’ because if you click on it, the TXT ? le will open up in the browser itself. The ? le name would be ‘V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-update8.sh.txt’ and is a plain text ? le with a lot of Linux commands in it. Save this ? le on your phone's SD card (keep it in the root folder of the SD card so it is easy to locate). Now, get on your phone and run the app ‘Script Manager’. Allow root access and make sure you click on the ‘Browse as root’ and then on ‘OK’. The next screen will open the built-in ? le browser to locate the script. Click on the update 8 supercharger script that you earlier saved on your SD card’s root folder, and you will reach the next screen. Here, make sure you click on the ‘SU’ button (the one with the skull and bones) and then click on the ‘Run’ button. Now wait and be patient while the commands in the script are being executed. Read every line carefully as you will know what it is doing. You will be asked for your inputs at particular points and you can do so by touching the screen anywhere in the center to bring up the onscreen keyboard. The ? rst time it will ask you to de? ne the scrolling speed—you can choose normal or fast according to your preference. We chose fast (1). You will see a number of lines scrolling by, giving you information along the way. You will also see a screen with around 17 to 30 options (depending on the script update version 8 or 9 you are using) from which the script will ask you to enter your choice. Enter the value ‘9’ as the optimum value for your phone. If your phone has RAM lower than 512 MB, you should choose 7 or 8. This will start the optimization of the operating system. In between, you will come across some lines that state that the phone is 0% supercharged and a few other lines stating the current and increased OOM values. Later, you will come across the line ‘100% supercharged’ towards the end of the script. Once the script has ?nished running, you might be asked to reboot the phone for the values to take ef ect. When done, simply exit the app, reboot the phone and you will see the dif erence in performance gradually increasing. To check if the phone is supercharged, you can run the script again and choose number ‘1’ from the list to see the status of the launcher and the supercharge.
We conducted a small test using ‘Antutu Benchmark’ to see if there has been any dif erence in the graphics performance, and there was. We used two phones—the HTC Desire Bravo, which has a 1 GHz processor and 576 MB of RAM running Oxygen GB ROM, and the HTC EVO 3D GSM, which has a dual core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM running stock GB Sense 3.0 ROM. The 3D graphics values of the HTC Desire jumped from 593 to 625, while the HTC EVO 3D jumped from 756 to 843. You can also choose to run the script every time you boot the handset to ensure you have the supercharger script doing its work in the background and you have a smoother handling experience. To do this, all you need to do is run the Script Manager, choose the Supercharger Script (the ? le will be named as 99SuperCharger.sh) from the ‘/data’ folder and select the option to run as root and run at boot before running the script again. This option will enable the operating system to include the supercharger script at every boot.
NOTE: Some might not experience too much of an improvement and are free to try dif erent values when running the script. You may revert all changes by simply choosing number ‘15’, which re? ects as ‘Unsupercharge’ in the list while running the script again.
Rooting the phone, running apps with root privileges, running the supercharger script and similar stuf can cause your phone to become unstable, get bricked and void warranty. We are not responsible for any mishaps or damage caused to your device by following this workshop. Do it at your own risk. Those who intend to do it anyways, we recommend a full nandroid backup before doing so.

Youtube is the most preferred and undoubtedly the most popular video destination on
the Internet. Little wonder then that there are several sites out there that allow you to
experiment with Youtube to get more from it. Let’s take a look at some of them and what
they have to offer.

QUIETUBE2.COM
If you love watching videos on Youtube, but find all the comments, ads, recommendations annoying, then you can use Quietube2.com. Simply open Quietube2.com and drag the ‘quietube’ button from here to the tab where the video is located. You can now enjoy your video without any distractions. It also supports Vimeo and Viddler

SYNCHTUBE.COM
You have a video that you want to share with some friends and get
their reactions instantly. You can share it on social networking sites, but then it will also be visible to others on your friends list. Here’s where Synchtube.com comes in. It provides you with a platform to create a virtual room, get your videos and invite your friends to view the same. What’s more, you can also chat with each other while watching the video.

MIXTUBE.ORG
As the name suggests, with Mixtube.org, you can create a mixed tape of your favorite Youtube music videos and share it with whoever you wish. The process is very simple. You can simply type or paste the video URL in the designated space and it will be added to your list. Alternatively, you have the option to type in the Youtube username to upload all the videos posted by that user to your playlist. You can then arrange, add or remove tracks as you wish. Another similar option is Dragontape.com

YOUTUBEDOUBLER.COM
Become a video DJ by combining two videos with the help of Youtubedoubler.com. You can take the fun element a notch higher
by playing together two dramatically different videos, and you're
guaranteed a laugh riot. All you have to do is go to the site and enter the URLs of the videos you want to play together and then share the doubled-up URL with your friends.

SPLICD.COM
If you want to share only a specific portion of a YouTube video, then you have the option to do so by adding #t=MMmSSs to the end of the URL. Here, MM stands for minutes and SS for seconds. When you share the link with these details, the video will start playing from the time mentioned. But with Splicd.com you can take it step further and share only the exact part of the video you wish to share by simply adding the start and the end time. Another alternative is Tubechop.com

YOUFLOW.FINNRUDOLPH.DE
A German start-up, YouFlow presents a novel way of browsing Youtube. On the site, you can type the search word and it will show you the results in the form of images arranged on a kind of slide. You can drag the slider and browse through the images. At one go, it will fetch you 50 video results. If you see something that interests you, then you can simply click on it and the video will start playing in a pop-up window. You also have the option to play more than one video at a time, which can be a handy feature.

PSYKOTUBE.COM
Another cool way of exploring Youtube is with the help of PsykoTube.com. Just enter your search word and hit [Enter]. PsykoTube.com will showcase several videos at one go neatly arranged in a tiled collage. If you move the cursor across the videos, then they will all start playing at once. Of course, if you have a slow connection, then do not attempt to do this. If you wish to see a particular video, then simply click on the tile and it will start playing in the window.

TUBEREPLAY.COM
If you love a particular video enough to watch it again and again, then TubeReplay.com is just the tool you were looking for. Just open the site, paste the URL of your video and click Enter. Once it reaches the end, it will automatically start again without you having to press the replay button. Other sites that allow you to play videos from Youtube in loop include Youlooper.com and Youtuberepeater.com.

TUBESNACK.COM
If you wish to create a playlist of all your favorite videos on Youtube so that you can play them when you like or even share them, then TubeSnack.com is just the site for you. With TubeSnack, you can share or embed a number of videos at once, build your playlist, and even choose from several stylish skins to further customize your playlists. You can also choose to create a classic or a Flash video playlist. Another option is Tubeloop.com, where you can discover videos shared by friends on Facebook and create a playlist with the same.

AMD’s new Fusion chips, which combine the capabilities of both the CPU and GPU, look set to give Intel a run for its money in the low-power mobile and desktop PC segment. The long-awaited family of Accelerated Processing Units is finally ready! ZOTAC’S test unit arrived at the very last minute, so a detailed lowdown of Fusion architecture and what it should mean to you will follow next month. This particular nettop uses an AMD E-350 APU, which is a dual-core processor with Radeon HD 6310 graphics built in.
A single-channel DDR3 controller is also integrated on the die. This chip consumes only 18 Watts and its cores clock in at 1.6 GHz. The chassis of the Zbox Plus Blu-ray is the same that ZOTAC has used with other Zbox variants—it’s tiny and looks more like a DVD player than a PC. This model is configured with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250 GB hard drive, Blu-ray reader and a Wi-Fi n adapter which makes it ideal for integration into a home theater system. Connectivity options include DVI and HDMI video outputs, two USB 3.0 ports (front and back), Gigabit Ethernet, optical S/PDIF out and one eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port. The unit draws power from an external adapter.
Fusion performance is comparable to a dual-core Atom D525 CPU on Nvidia’s ION platform. The Zbox scored 4522 points in 3DMark Vantage (entry mode); much more powerful than the on-chip graphics of older Intel Core i5 CPUs (but doesn’t match up to the newer Sandy Bridge CPUs). The HD 6310 is capable of decoding full HD content and handling games at 1024x768 with low settings.
The Zbox Plus Blu-ray comes with a VESA mount bracket and CyberLink BD software. It commands a hefty price for its diminutive size, but it’s the fi rst taste of Fusion, and could be a brilliant solution for home theater enthusiasts.
Not all high-end PC cases are built with fancy lights and transparent panels. The Obsidian 550D is exactly the opposite—sedate, unassuming, and almost too dull. It’s a simple rectangle in a uniform shade of black, save for one metal panel in front. A closer look reveals the 550D’s secrets. There are no fewer than three concealed fan locations with magnetic dust filters concealed behind pop-out doors. The entire case is designed to dampen sound, so you’ll find foam padding on the doors and other openings.
The pop-out doors are also padded so that the case remains relatively quiet when they’re on, and airflow improves when they’re off. The cabinet’s external build quality is generally solid except for the clasps securing the fan doors and the front panel, which seem like they could break with very little provocation. Amazingly, wires and peripherals plugged into the front panel snag when trying to open the door—a huge annoyance.Push-buttons on the rear release the side panels, revealing superb design and construction. The drive caddies, fans and PSU mount have silicone pads to minimize vibration. You get two 120-mm intake fans on the front and another 120 mm exhaust fan on the rear. There are provisions for another two fans (or a radiator) on top, one on the bottom, and one on the side panel, complete with air filters.
The LaserJet Pro 400 MFP m425dw features print, scan, copy and fax functions. You can connect it to a PC via the USB 2.0 interface or to the local network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. When connected to the internet, you can either print online documents or fire a print on it from anywhere in the world. The monochrome laser printer can print documents with resolutions of 1200 x 1200 dpi. It is built using an 800 MHz processor coupled with a huge 256 MB of RAM. The printer also features an automatic duplex mechanism. The flatbed scanner features an optical resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. The lid also includes an ADF mechanism which has a second scanner head built into it, which helps you to simultaneously scan both sides of the paper in a single pass. The copy mode can print with resolutions of up to 600 x 600 dpi and can copy documents at speeds of up to 33 pages/copies per minute.
The printer incorporates a great energy saving feature called HP Auto-On/Auto-OffTechnology that turns the printer offwhen you don’t need it. Simply fire a print command and the USB wake up feature will power up the printer, print the document and shutdown automatically. The fuser used in this printer heats up only when needed and that too only the area of the drum, which is in contact with the passing paper. The toner used here is also a low temperature fusing ink, which does not need the fuser to heat up as much as other laser printers. Hence, the cartridges used here cannot be refilled using regular laser toner inks.
Shipped along with the MFP is the HP 80A toner cartridge which can deliver around 2,700 pages. Priced at Rs 7,000, it gives a print economy of Rs 2.20 per print. The MFP can also print and scan to USB pen drives using the USB port located on the front. The control panel features a large, crisp 3.5-inch touchscreen, with six touch buttons around it. You can also download apps for the printer, which can be printed directly via the internet. An additional bonus feature here is the option to wirelessly print from a mobile phone without any drivers. The built-in wireless access point allows up to five mobile devices to connect directly to the printer. We tested the printer and obtained print speeds of 33 ppm with A4 sheets. We also printed a 10-page Word document in auto-duplex in just 40 seconds. We also scanned a 10-page document to PDF format in just 1 min 51 sec. Copy mode takes about 10 seconds for a single side of an A4 page. The grayscale linearization test showed excellent printed colors and shades of grey with few or no errors. Resolution tests showed good details and contrasts. The copy mode was a little disappointing though—we found the copies to be a bit smudged with loss in details

Mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILC) are becoming increasingly popular. This new breed started gaining momentum with micro four-thirds cameras like the Olympus PEN E-P1, which use 4/3-type sensors that are half the size of sensors used in entry-level digital SLRs and about nine times the size of sensors used in compact cameras. The latest development in the MILC segment is models that use APS-C size sensors. The first such camera was the Samsung NX1, and now we have two models that Sony recently added to their Alpha brand, NEX-3 and NEX-5. Both models sport a 14.2 megapixel sensor and HD movie recording capabilities. The major difference between the two is that the NEX-5 boasts 1080i video recording and the NEX-3 does it at 720p.

Features

The retail sample of NEX-3 that we got from Sony had the body, 18-55 mm kit lens, add-on flash, battery charger and neck strap. Despite a large sensor (23.4 x 15.6 mm), the NEX-3 is very slim (33 mm), unlike DSLRs, which are twice as thick. DSLRs get the bulk from the mirror box and the optical viewfinder mechanism through which you can see the frame via the lens. The mirror box has a mirror, which reflects the image of the frame to a five sided prism (pentaprism). When you see through the optical viewfinder, you see the frame reflected back by the pentaprism. On releasing the shutter, the mirror flips upward and makes way for light to reach the exposed sensor. After the photo is shot, the mirror returns to its position. That’s why you hear a prominent clapping sound when you shoot with a DSLR. Mirrorless cameras are slim because they don’t use a mirrorbox. Hence, they don’t have an optical viewfinder and the flange focal distance from the lens mount to the sensor is also less. So you have to frame your shots using the LCD. The NEX-3 features a 3-inch flip out LCD with a resolution of 921k dots. The LCD flips up 90 degrees and can be tilted 45 degrees downward, but it doesn’t flip out sideways or rotate. This acts as a limitation when you want to shoot from odd angles. Nevertheless, it’s good enough to shoot in a crowd with the camera over your head or if you wish to get a bug’s-eye view of the subject.
The control panel to the right of the screen comprises two buttons, whose function depends on the mode you’re using, and a jog dial that doubles up as a 5-way d-pad with a button at the center. There’s a small rubber patch at the top-right corner, which lends a good grip. You use the index finger to release the shutter and the last three fingers curl around the body. The grip isn’t as satisfying as holding a DSLR camera because it’s too slim. Also, the grip surface is plastic with tiny square blocks, unlike DSLRs, which offer a rubberized surface. The top houses the playback button, stereo mic and a proprietary Smart Accessory Port. Besides the bundled flash, you can also use an optical viewfinder and stereo microphone, which are optional. The flash can be enabled by simply lifting it up.

Both cameras use a new E-mount for compatible interchangeable lenses. The choice of lenses is very limited, but you can use A-mount lenses meant for Sony’s Alpha DSLR cameras with the LA-EA1 adapter, which is again an optional accessory. The bundled 18-55 mm F3.5-5.6 lens has a metal finish and is of excellent quality. It employs Sony’s Optical SteadyShot tech for image stabilization and the
plastic petal hood cuts out flare.

User Interface

The NEX-3 is a breeze to use thanks to its intuitive user interface. The Menu button brings up the main menu from which you can choose the shooting mode, camera settings, image parameters and playback settings. You can use the jog dial or the d-pad to scroll through the menu. It would have been more convenient if there was a mode selection dial on the top rather than having to press the center button of the d-pad and using the jog dial each time you wish to change the shooting mode. A good thing here is that a detailed description of the mode is displayed on the screen. In addition to the Intelligent Auto mode, which automatically identifi es the characteristics of the scene and uses appropriate exposure settings, there are Program (P), Aperture Priority (A), Shutter Priority (S), Manual (M), 3D Sweep Panorama, Sweep Panorama, Anti Motion Blur and Scene Selection modes. So depending on the subject, lighting, type of scene, and your knowledge of exposure settings, there’s pretty much everything to choose from. The most interesting mode is Sweep Panorama, which lets you capture a 180 degree panorama. This feature is offered in Sony’s premium digital cameras, but it has a different feel here. The moment you release the shutter, the camera goes ‘click’, ‘click’, ‘click’ rapidly. You’re supposed to pan the camera 180 degrees from left to right. The results are outstanding. 3D Sweep Panorama shoots 3D images, but they can only be viewed with 3D glasses on 3D TVs. The camera has a mini HDMI jack for video output. We also liked the built-in shooting guide. Shooting tips can be accessed by the press of a button in iAuto, Panorama, 3D Panorama and Scene selection modes. Those who aren’t familiar with camera settings can refer to these tips pertaining to the selected mode and get better shots. The NEX-3 stores images in JPG and RAW formats. The package includes a 4 GB SD card.

Performance

We used this camera for almost a week. We shot portraits, took photos in low light, tried out all the modes, and explored all the functions. The focusing speed of the lens is excellent; half-press the shutter release and it takes no time to focus on the subject. The colors and details came out very well. We were impressed particularly with the photos captured in low light with high ISO values. The ISO can go as high as 12800, which sounds gimmicky, but it actually isn’t. Even at ISO 6400, where most DSLRs struggle, low light shots with this camera didn’t look bad. The images were noisy, but the quality was acceptable. However, high ISO values can only be set in PASM modes, which is a big drawback. In iAuto and Scene selection modes, the ISO doesn’t go beyond 1600. Videos shot at 720p also looked nice. Manual zoom while shooting videos is allowed and the focusing is taken care of by the camera.

The overall imaging performance is good, but the battery life of this camera is a major turn-off. After every few shots, you’ll find a drop in the battery indicator. The drain is all the more quicker with RAW mode and flash enabled.

The PowerShot A4000 IS is Canon’s new entrant in the above entry level segment of compacts. The camera is stylishly designed and is available in a range of colors. Though this model is not that highly priced, it comes with features that are found on higher end cameras, such as 8x optical zoom, giving you great close up shots. Canon’s image stabilizer works well to keep the blur to a minimum. It is fi tted with a 16 MP CCD sensor and is powered by a DIGIC 4 image processor. The interface is extremely simple to use and most of the operation is done using the set and menu buttons. A first-time user can get familiar with the functionality within minutes. The A4000 IS has various presets like fi sh eye effect, miniature effect, toy camera that allow one to capture artistic images. 1080p video recording isn’t available, but you can record at 720p at 25 fps. The performance of the camera is good and colors from images shot outdoors appear accurately. In indoor shots, the picture quality is not that great as there was an amount of image grain seen. Videos recorded at 720p were decent and there was suffi cient clarity observed. Priced at Rs 10,580, it offers great features for a casual photographer at an attractive price.
Although regular inkjet printers and multifunction devices can also print 4x6 photos, portable photo printers are all about convenience and quality. The newly launched Epson PictureMate PM 245 makes printing 4x6 photos a breeze. Weighing in at 2.3 kg, it’s quite portable and not too heavy to carry around. The device is all-white and the entire shell has a matte finish except the lid which has a glossy fi nish. Opening the lid reveals the vertical paper feed, control panel and a 2.5-inch tilting LCD which displays the user interface. There’s a tiny door in the front that doubles as an output tray when opened. Memory card slots supporting a host of card formats that include SD/MMC, xD, Memory Stick (MS), and Compact Flash are located behind the door. On loading a memory card, the printer instantly reads the contents and displays thumbnails of all the images on the card. The menu navigation is very simple and a 2-line description for every option you select makes operation very easy. From the time you press the Print button, it takes around 45 seconds to print a borderless 4x6-inch photo. The print quality is very good with excellent reproduction of details and good contrast. The Epson Picture Pack, which includes a cartridge and 150 sheets costs Rs 1,514. So the cost per print translates to Rs 10. If you want studio quality prints in an instant, the PM 245 is a good investment.

Point-and-shoot digital cameras offer extreme ease of use at a sweet price point. The Olympus VG-170, an upgrade to the VG-140, is one such camera. The VG-170’s flash is large and almost twice as intense as flash strobes on most other point-and-shoots, making for well-exposed shots even in pitch darkness. Like the VG-140, this model too features a 14 megapixel sensor and a 5x zoom lens with a focal length of 26 mm at the widest end. The rear of the camera is flanked by a large three-inch LCD and the control panel. Right on top is a hotkey for video recording and a textured thumb grip. The location of the hotkey allows for instant access without any strain. The control panel comprises of a five-way d-pad and buttons for Menu and Playback.
The Olympus VG-170 doesn’t boast of elaborate controls; you get the Intelligent Auto, Program, Dual IS, Scene and Magic Filter modes. The feature set, build quality and ergonomics of the VG-170 are very good. We expected the performance to be good too, but it was disappointing. The photos we shot looked good on the camera screen, but at 100 percent zoom, the reproduction of details was poor. For the kind of features it offers and the below-average performance, we find the VG-170 too steeply priced.
The market for entry-level compact cameras is chock full of options offering features that are quite similar. In such a scenario, what can a brand do to stand out? Canon has come up with an ideal solution with the PowerShot A3400 IS, which among other features, has a resistive touchscreen interface. This feature lets you to use the screen to focus and also capture snaps. The interface is extremely easy to use and the touchscreen is an immense help as different modes and presets can be selected by simply tapping on the desired option.
The camera uses a 16 MP sensor along with a 5x optical zoom. It features an inbuilt image stabilizer that helps in reducing blur. Video can be recorded in HD 720. The camera’s program mode lets you tweak settings like ISO sensitivity, exposure and white balance. In outdoor shots, the amount of colour fringing is negligible. In indoor shots, however, images appear a bit grainy, especially when zoomed in 100 percent on a PC. This makes it difficult to get crisp shots in low-light conditions. Priced at Rs 9,995, this is an ideal option for casual photographers who want a stylish camera with a touchscreen
Nokia's latest round of layoffs and project cancellations has apparently claimed a major victim: the company's Meltemi effort to replace the ageing Series 30 and 40 operating systems on its budget and midrange handsets. Without confirming that such a project had ever existed, CEO Stephen Elop confirmed to analysts and reporters that several engineering projects have been shelved. Nokia will now focus on improving Series 40 which powers the Asha range of affortable phones. In the days that followed, a group sprung up on LinkedIn, with the name Meltemi Product Developer Alumni. Posts on the group appeared to indicate that the project was very nearly complete. Nokia has laid off thousands of workers and closed several facilities in the past few months, and sales of Lumia phones in the next quarter will also be bleak thanks to their just-announced incompatibility with Windows Phone 8

Geeks, environmental activists and consumer watchdogs have taken to the Web to vent their frustrations at the new MacBook Pro, which has been dubbed the "least upgradable computer ever". Continuing in Apple's tradition of eliminating user-serviceable parts in order to craft thinner and better looking devices, the new MacBook Pro's Retina display is fused directly to the lid, requiring an expensive and possibly wasteful procedure should a replacement ever be necessary. In addition, the RAM and SSD are soldered directly onto the unit's motherboard, reducing their footprint but involving a massive expense for upgrades, not to mention a need to take the device to a service center. The battery is, of course, sealed right into the chassis as well.
Unfortunately users who must choose between the thin-and-light MacBook Pro with its Retina display, and the previous generation design will almost certainly pick the new one, unmindful of its limitations.

Yes, I know this game is nearly three months old but when you have fingers as big as mine, you’d ideally like to wait for your iPad to arrive so you no longer have to fumble about on your mobile device obstructing half the screen in the process. And plus, right now I’ve been watching back to back episodes of Spartacus so I’ll gladly lap up any-thing that deals with Romans and their sick (though kind of awesome) sport.
I personally would have liked to see Blood and Glory churn out a twisted, intricate tale of a man being forced to fight for his freedom in the coliseum but it seems developer Glu Games had other ideas. They dump you into an arena, hand you a sword, a shield and encourage you to draw blood. That works too.
Gameplay in Blood and Glory is a spitting image of Infin-ity Blade. Both you and your opponent arelocked onto the screen and you can only move in the left or right direction (strafers beware). Using the iPad’s touch screen functionality you dodge, block or parry incoming attacks. Successfully dodge or parry an incoming attack and you’ll get a small window of opportunity to slash away at his health bar. Attacking your opponents builds up a meter which when full can be used to execute a special attack. It’s more exotic than it sounds though as the special attack in this case is just a shield bash. Still that temporarily stuns your oppo-nent allowing you to pummel him for a few seconds. Quite a life-saver in particularly hairy battles. The amount of times you can block incoming attacks is also limited. With weaker shields you can maybe weather 12 blocks but as you upgrade your shield, you can soak up more damage. As your sword takes down more gladiators, you’ll amass experi-ence points that can be used to upgrade your abilities or buy better weapons. It’s a fairly simple RPG inspired structure that rewards players for cutting more dudes down. However since this is a free to play game, most of the upgrades are so exorbitantly priced, you’ll be forced to shell out real world money for them unless you’re content with grinding away at the same battles for hours on end. Now this is a standard business model with most free to play games but even then, I thought the cost of actually buying upgrades was too steep. Also locking out gore unless you ponied up some money for it is just plain lame.
Blood and Glory may play like Infinity Blade but it doesn’t share the game’s penchant for stellar presentation. That being said, the game doesn’t look too bad. Character mod-els look decent and they reflect the damage reflected upon them in a convincing manner. Since there’s no story to speak of over here, there’s no real voice acting involved other than random and totally point-less taunts uttered by But at the end of the day Blood and Glory is a free game so you don’t stand to lose anything even if it’s not to your liking. I for one would have rather pur-chased the game outright instead of paying ridiculous sums for upgrades. Still this is all I have to satiate my gladiatorial needs so I’ll keep at it till Capcom give us a sequel to Shadow of Rome (a guy can hope right?).

Developed strictly for Mass Effect fans, Mass Effect Infiltrator (MEI) is the handheld extension of Bioware’s rather popular sci-fi franchise. It is based in the Mass Effect 3 universe yes, but besides carrying the moniker, the game bears little resemblance to the recently released Mass Effect 3.
Since Commander Shepard is off saving Earth against the Reaper invasion, you’ll step into the boots of Cerberus Operative Randall Ezno, who like all cleanup guys, realizes how horrible his employer is after becoming privy to certain experiments. Like its console counterpart, MEI is a third-per-son cover-based shooter wherein you takecover, shoot dudes in the face, and move on. It’s rather simple stuff made a tad complicated by the awkward controls.
Taking cover works fairly wellin this game as you take cover by sprinting towards it. Moving from cover to cover is also a fluid process made simple by the swipe of a finger. Shooting enemies is where things tend to get a bit iffy. Once an opponent comes into range, you have to tap on him/it once and after he’s highlighted, you haveto align the reticule to his head using your finger. I would advise players to go straight for the head because most of your opponents are born bullet sponges capable of absorbing a ridiculous amount of damage to the rest of the body. If surrounded by multiple opponents, you can also chain headshots by quickly tapping on all their heads. When it works, the combat in MEI feels fast, fluid and exciting, but ever so often, it’ll all fall apart when an opponent gets too close from comfort. Getting away from him to high-light him and then target his head becomes so awkward, you

will end up dying nine times out of ten. Things get a bit worse during boss fights as there is no roll or dodge button so your only choice is sprinting away from their attacks. Once again, this feels quite clumsy and will most probably result in your death.
Switching between weapons and powers also feels like a tedious process as you have to hold down on a power/weapon, wait for a small menu to open up and only then can you choose the weapon you wish to switch to. This gets annoying during heated battles when you need to quickly switch between weapons and powers.
Once you do get the hang of combat, things progress a lot smoother unless you hit some of the speed bumps I men-tioned earlier. After every enemy encounter, you're graded on your style determined by time taken, headshots chained, and powers used. The higher you score, the more cash you earn that is obviously used to upgrade Ezno’s abilities on the bat-tlefield. Besides the staple stuff like better armor and weapon improvement, you can pick up a bunch of biotic abilities that do make combat a little bit easier. While it did hurt my feelings to see the game dish out a measly one star after most enemy encounters, I found the whole system of grading players after every enemy encounter a bit jarring. I have no issue with the principle of rewarding players for playing stylishly, but is it really necessary to do so after every single encounter? Why not wait till I hit a checkpoint or finish the entire level? Infiltrator is one of the few games on the iPad that can proudly say it offers console-level visuals. I really can’t fault the game in the visual department because it really handles itself extremely well there, but the game’s art style can get extremely repetitive. In fact, repetitive is a word I would use to describe this game in general as it runs out of steam really fast, forcing players to just run through similar looking rooms battling the same opponents over and over again. Sure, the entire Infinity Blade series does that too, but at least they don’t expect you to do so with frustrating controls. Mass Effect Infiltrator could have been better, but that doesn’t mean it’s a terrible game. Sure the control scheme kind of sucks and yes, it does end up getting repetitive, but when the game works, it provides solid entertainment to anyone looking at further exploring the Mass Effect universe. This one however is strictly for the fans
The Xperia S feels absolutely lovely to hold and although the chassis is built from plastic, it’s really hard to tell. For connectivity, we have a plastic flap-covered microUSB port and HDMI port on either sides while the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the top. Buttons on the phone include the volume rocker, camera shutter and a power/sleep button. On the front, we have the 1.3 MP front facing camera along with a scratch-resistant 4.3-inch screen. There’s even a notification light on the left side. With a resolution of 1280 x 720, the Xperia S sails past the iPhone’s Retina Display with a pixel count of 342 ppi. Coupled with the Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, this makes anything and everything on the screen appear super sharp and crisp. The bottom has the new translucent strip which holds the labels for the capacitive buttons. The sensitivity of the capacitive buttons isn’t all that great and there were many instances when it refused to register any input.Coming to the back of the phone, we just have the 12 MP camera, LED fl ash and the speaker. The Xperia S uses a microSIM card and there’s no expandable memory support, just 32 GB of onboard storage. Also, the battery is not user replaceable. While everyone is launching Android 4.0 handsets, Sony has stuck with Gingerbread (2.3.7) for now with a planned ICS update somewhere down the line. Sony have stuck with the same features and functions in Timescape from their previous phones and just tweaked some of the apps. The phone is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 processor running at 1.5 GHz. This, coupled with 1 GB of RAM ensures that even graphic-intensive apps and games run smoothly. The sound quality is good and the bundled headset provides good noise isolation. The speaker is also loud enough to be enjoyed in a small group. The Xperia S handles 1080p videos like a champ without skipping a frame. HD videos look especially good due to the densely packed screen. The stock browser does its job and surfing the net on the Xperia S is a great experience thanks to the rich screen. Even when fully zoomed into text, it appears sharp and crisp. One of the biggest selling points for the Xperia S is the 12 MP camera it packs in. The Exmor R camera sensor is supposed to help remove noise in low light conditions. In the outdoors the camera turns into another beast altogether. The camera automatically adds depth of field when the subject is close giving you some pretty crazy pictures. You can activate the camera directly by simply holding down the shutter button and up comes the viewfinder. Sony has also added 3D Sweep Panorama, similar to the one seen in their digicams. The Xperia S can record video in 1080p with continuous auto-focus. The video can viewed directly on an HDTV via the HDMI port.
The Xperia S comes with a 1750 mAh battery, which lasted a little less than a day under heavy usage. It’s expensive, but it’s one of the best options out there if a great camera is your top priority.

While the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 is great when it comes to performance and style, it’s not the most affordable option out there. As you go down the order with respect to price, you have to compromise on performance and features. But in the case of Acer's Aspire E1-571, compromise is one word you won't have on your mind. It uses the same processor as the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570, but a diff erent chipset. In effect, the Aspire E1 matches up with the Lenovo Z570 across almost all CPU-oriented benchmarks; trailing behind only on the gaming and graphics fronts. Clearly, this isn’t a laptop you want to buy if you’re thinking of gaming. But keep the gaming aspect aside, and the Aspire E1 does above average across all other tests. The E1 has decent speakers and good build quality. It's is not the swankiest, but it looks and feels better than the Zenith Uranium Plus, which is just a tiny bit cheaper. It’s got a sober look to it, with a plain grey, plastic panel around the trackpad, a black bezel display and keyboard. There are no physical buttons or hotkeys to play around with, but the shortcut keys are present and they are well laid out.
If you want to use the laptop as a media centre PC, you can do that too. The Intel HD 3000 graphics solution might not be suited for gaming, but high-definition video is no problem. The HDMI connectivity means you can connect it to a TV using a cable. The screen isn’t spectacular, but at the same time, it’s not as bad as some of the other notebooks we’ve seen.
The keyboard isn’t a chiclet-style one, but it’s got a nice feel to it. There’s enough travel and feedback and they’re the largest we’ve seen on the laptops we compared, which makes for comfortable typing.
For a product that’s a good Rs.10,000 cheaper than the Z570, and one of the cheapest in this test, the Aspire E1 offers great bang for your buck. The package includes a Windows 7 Home Basic license. If you were to take away the integrated solutions on the high-end notebooks in this test, this one would be almost at par with them. We suggest you to absolutely go for this notebook if you’re on a tight budget.

Dell has created an incredibly sexy looking notebook with the XPS 13. It doesn’t matter from which angle you look at it; it is definitely a head turner. This is mainly due tothe choice of materials in the chassis. The lid and most of the base is crafted from machined aluminium and the base is protected by carbon fire. This makes it extremely sturdy and durable, while still maintaining a very slim profile. The notebook measures about 18 mm in depth at its thickest point and weighs around 1.36 kg.Connectivity is the best among ultrabooks. While it’s nice to see USB 3.0, there are just two ports when we normally have three. DisplayPort is a nice addition, but it would have been better if we had HDMI, since the cables are easier to find and are cheaper as well. There’s no card reader present, which is a shame. Other ports include a headphone jack and a battery status indicator.
Inside, we’re greeted by a 13.3-inch display with Corning’s Gorilla Glass for protection. The edge-to-edge glass gives the screen a seamless look and also allows Dell to fit a larger screen into a smaller chassis. Along with the 1.3 MP webcam, there’s an ambient light sensor as well that automatically dims and brightens the display based on the amount of light in the room. The keyboard area has a nice rubber finish and the same extends to the trackpad too.Dell is offering the XPS 13 in three pre-set flavors. We got the base model, which packs in a Core i5-2467M CPU from Intel’s ULV range. The other components include a 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD.Software-wise, you get some utilities from Dell, like DataSafe Online backup and a webcam utility.
The XPS 13 is certainly quick, but then again, it should be considering the OS resides on an SSD. Typing on the notebook is relatively stress-free and the keys offer a good tactile response. As far as performance goes, it’s very similar to the Lenovo U300s. It manages slightly better performance in PCMark Vantage, but when it comes to video encoding or rendering, the Asus pulls ahead. The audio is quite loud if you’re listening to lounge music, but music that makes heavy use of bass doesn’t sound great.Dell throws in a 47 WHr 6-cell battery that’s non-removable. If you use the ultrabook carefully with a little word processing and browsing, it will easily last you for about 4 to 5 hours. However, if you’re going to watch a lot of videos, then it will drain out a lot quicker. The XPS 13 lasted just 2 hrs in Battery Eater Pro, which is a lot less when compared to the Asus UX31, which lasted for 3 hrs 20 min, and it had a Core i7 CPU.
The Dell XPS 13 range starts from Rs 79,900, which is just too expensive for what’s on offer. Granted, it’s a very well put together ultrabook and it has looks to die for. If thin and light is your main concern, then Acer’s TimeLine X series offers very good, value-for-money notebooks.
When it comes to bridging the gap between compact point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs, there are many brands that have launched models with small form factors that have sensors larger than those traditionally found on point-and-shoot cameras. A brand has held back from this segment is Canon, as they are yet to unveil such a camera. Until that happens however, Canon has introduced another product from their PowerShot line-up that aims to compete with these cameras: the G1X.
The G1X is loaded with features that would please both professional and amateur photographers. This camera is feature-packed with all the necessary controls for manual and semi-manual modes. The chief attribute of the G1X is the fact that it features asensor that measures 1.5-inches. This is by far the largest sensor found on a point-and-shoot. In fact, it is larger than a Micro Four Thirds sensor and sits just below Canon’s APS-C range used on their DSLRs. With this 14.1 MP sensor, along with the brand’s latest DIGIC 5 imaging processor, one can aim to get DSLR-like images. The brand has used a non-removable 4x optical zoom lens on this model, which on a 35 mm film equivalent is 28 - 112 mm. The aperture of this model ranges from f/2.8 to f/16; such wide aperture could let a significant amount of light to hit the lens in low light shots. The G1X features a high-resolution three-inch screen at the rear that sports a resolution of approximately 922K dots. The optical viewfinder is crisp and features a lot of detail. However, it does not provide 100 percent coverage. This model features the various dials needed for accessing different modes and settings. However, there are some features that need to be accessed from the interface as well; e.g., for adjusting white balance, bracketing, etc. It is really easy to use and unlike other professional point-and-shoots, there is no learning curve that goes with this model. The camera allows video recording at full HD 1080p at 24 fps and at HD 720 at 30 fps. The G1X can capture images in 14-bit RAW as well as JPEG.
The outdoor and indoor performances of the camera are excellent. Colours are rendered accurately with skin tones and other colours appearing natural. Full HD video recording was smooth and we were pleased with the overall performance. Priced in India at Rs 47,995, this is an extremely expensive camera; but, the price will probably put most people off. A professional camera loaded with features, it can be a good alternative for a DSLR camera. However, Canon, unlike other brands, are not looking to launch a camera that bridges the gap between DSLR cameras and compact options. Instead, the G1X is designed for owners of DSLR cameras looking for a point-and-shoot option

> Familiarize yourself with the track pad on the demo piece. You must know if your track pad mouse has a decent response speed, consider-ing that you might take the netbook outdoors and may not enjoy the comfort of carrying a mouse around.

> Pick an operating system which will fit your needs. If you are using a Windows OS and want to work with Microsoft Office, you might have to shell out more. While Windows offers familiarity and better compatibility with most peripherals, Linux uses fewer resources to run, is lighter on the system and comes with bundled utilities.

> While netbooks are shrinking in size, a 10-inch screen is ideal to work with. There are netbooks with smaller screens too, but they might get a bit difficult to work with considering if you use applications similar to those used on a laptop.

> Since a netbook offers the bare minimum in terms of features, you may need to buy a few peripherals. Check the number of USB ports, external VGA ports, and Ethernet jacks.

DON’TS

> Avoid processors like Celeron that cannot keep up with heavy processes. If you pick a Windows-based system, the Atom processors work well.

> Don’t go for a 512 MB RAM; you might fi nd it a bit difficult to upgrade it later. Opt for 1 GB or 2 GB RAM instead and a fairly spacious hard disk.

> Don’t buy a netbook if you need to work with heavy applications like Adobe Photoshop. You can use a netbook as an interim measure, but don’t buy it as a replacement for your laptop or desktop PC.

> Don’t settle for Wi-Fi connectivity lower than 802.11 b/g. The norms are shifting and its time to move with the times.

> If you do plan to use the netbook outdoors a lot, and don’t have a charging port handy, invest in an extended-range six-cell battery, so that it can last longer.
